What is Retained Executive Search?

Retained Executive Search Firm

Conventional/Contingency Recruiting
Conventional (or Contingency) search/recruitment is a recognized professional service that addresses a specific market need, which is different from Retained Executive Search. Contingency search tends to address lower-and middle-management positions, where there are likely to be a larger universe of suitably qualified candidates and where the skills required are of a generic nature.  Selection of candidates is undertaken from a randomly compiled candidates' universe as opposed to scrupulous demarcation of a specific candidates' universe for each search project as is the case with retained executive search. In the case of conventional recruiting firms, the bulk of candidate pools are those seeking a change in career or those candidates who are currently not employed.  As a result of economic feasibility consideration, contingency search/recruitment cannot adopt the methods of retained executive search of tailored research, qualification and development of candidates.

The client pays fees to contingency search firm only when client actually hires a candidate introduced by the firm.  For such an enterprise to succeed as a going-business-concern, the conventional recruiting firm charges fees to both candidates and clients to augment income of the business.
